““Oh my god, what a sensation driving that car on the freeway,” said Gilles who has championed the super sportscar’s revival. He spoke this morning at a breakfast hosted by the law firm Dawda Mann. “With the modern day cell phones everyone was almost crashing into me trying to take pictures.”
Chrysler discontinued the Viper in 2010 because of financial difficulties but decided bring it back after Fiat became the company’s controlling shareholder.
“The history of Viper runs deep. The private equity guys tried to snuff it out, but it’s like the weed that keeps growing back,” Gilles said.
While Chrysler and Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne ultimately approved the decision to bring the Viper back, Gilles said work began before that.
“It was done in the darkest hour you could imagine,” Gilles said. “I threw this project to the designers to keep them motivated.”
The original Dodge Viper was shown as a concept at the 1989 North American International Auto Show and was sold from 1992 to 2010. The new Viper joins Chrysler’s SRT, or Street and Racing Technology brand.
The 2013 SRT Viper will be equipped with an 8.4-liter V10 engine that generates 640 horsepower and nearly 600 pound-feet of torque. The high-performance sports car will reach dealer showrooms during the fourth quarter of this year.
Gilles said the company still has a lot of work to do on the manufacturing process for the Viper.
“We are really quality focused right now,” Gilles said. “It’s not so much about rushing into the market. It’s really making sure its right.”
The SRT Viper will be built at Chrysler’s Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit by about 150 hourly and salaried workers. The plant, idled in 2010, has been refurbished, Gilles said.
“It went from looking like a dungeon to a CVS pharmacy,” Gilles said.

The 2013 Dodge Dart is arguably the most anticipated vehicle of the year, according to analysts.
Even before its introduction at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit earlier this year, the vehicle had a certain “buzz” surrounding it.
“The early indication is that vehicle is not necessary going to be a high, high volume vehicle, but it is the right type of smaller car entry for Dodge,” Jeff Schuster, senior vice president of global forecasting at LMC Automotive, told MLive.com following its unveiling in January. “An area they have really been lacking in prior to the Fiat tie-up.
“I think it’s really showing the benefit of the two companies coming together.”
The Dart – expected to hit showrooms in June -- is the first vehicle the Auburn Hills-based automaker jointly designed with the its Italian owner, Fiat SpA. It is based on the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, a compact sold in Europe, but is wider and longer to handle Americans' need for more space.
On Monday, Chrysler released that the vehicle be offered in SE, SXT, Rallye, Limited and R/T models that range from about $16,000 to more than $22,500.
Chrysler is touting the new vehicle as the embodiment of customization, with 14 interior colors, 12 exterior colors, six wheel options, three engine choices and three transmissions.

March 1, 2012 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Just days after earning the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) highest 5-star safety rating, the new 2012 Chrysler 300 flagship sedan is chalking up another accolade, Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com “10 Best Family Cars of 2012” award. For the last five years, the expert editors at kbb.com have awarded the 10 Best Family Cars that cater to unique family specifications and situations.
“Well-equipped at its starting price under $30,000, the Chrysler 300 qualifies as a screaming deal for those who favor a full-size sedan with outstanding comfort, loads of premium standard features and a distinctive sense of style,” said Jack R. Nerad, Executive Editorial Director and Executive Market Analyst for Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com. “Redesigned for 2011, the Chrysler 300 gets even better for 2012 thanks to a new economy-enhancing V-6 engine and segment-exclusive eight-speed automatic transmission.”
The 10 Best Family Cars of 2012 list consists of new vehicles that are family-approved in a big way, offering safety, comfort, child-friendliness, strong consumer ratings and impressive Kelley Blue Book Total Cost of Ownership statistics.
Transportation costs during the ownership period are important for families trying to get by on tight budgets. A vital part of kbb.com’s selection process was identifying new vehicles that have low cost of ownership in the initial five-year ownership period. Available on kbb.com, Total Cost of Ownership information examines depreciation, expected fuel costs, finance and insurance fees, maintenance and repair costs, and state fees for new models.
“At a time when the nation is regaining confidence and that fighting American ‘can-do’ spirit, the new Chrysler 300 series sedans reward these hard working folks with the world-class engineering, craftsmanship, safety and technology features that were once only found on high end sedans costing two or even three times the price,” said Saad Chehab, President and CEO – Chrysler Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “We’re honored that Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com editors scrutinized our Chrysler 300 flagship sedan and recognized it for its quality and precision engineering that were once limited to the privileged few. This recognition goes to further demonstrate that Chrysler brand is now a top choice for the most demanding consumers.”
